DFH RECOMMENDS

LOCH LOMOND & THE TROSSACHS

Loch Lomond is somewhat of a bridge between the lowlands and highlands, and one of the most rewarding spots with the least effort to get to. It has something for everyone’s tastes.

Slow peaceful walks along its bonnie banks, scenic trails and boat rides. If you're into local legends, head over to Doon Hill to find the ancient pine tree steeped in folklore, it’s said to be a gateway to a hidden fairy realm linked to the mysterious Robert Kirk.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you can swing through the treetops on an aerial course, grab a kayak to explore the water, or even head out for some pony trekking through the hills.

The landscape changes completely as the seasons shift. The bright, lush greens of summer eventually make way for an autumn palette of deep reds and golds, making it an incredible backdrop for a trip at any pace, whether you’re here for the views or the thrills.

FORT WILLIAM & GLENCOE

Carved from the remnants of an ancient supervolcano, Glencoe is a landscape of raw drama and haunting beauty, where towering peaks and sweeping glens are matched by a deeply moving past.

The story of the Glencoe Massacre lingers, brought to life at the visitor centre, which recounts the betrayal of the Clan MacDonald.

Beyond its history, the region invites exploration, from the cinematic single-track journey along Glen Etive, ending at the serene shores of Loch Etive, to winter days on the slopes of Glencoe Mountain Resort, overlooking the vast wilderness of Rannoch Moor.

Nearby, Fort William offers further character, from the storied ruins of Old Inverlochy Castle to welcoming Highland hospitality at Ben Nevis Inn and Clachaig Inn, where roaring fires, fine whisky, and live music provide the perfect close to a day immersed in one of Scotland’s most evocative settings.

CAIRNGORMS

Vast, wild and packed with life, the Cairngorms is the kind of place where hidden glens and open straths shelter some of the most interesting plants and animals you’ll ever see. The Cairngorm Mountains create a rare tundra-like habitat that’s home to elusive wildlife you literally won’t find anywhere else in the UK.

This is a spot built for exploring all year round, whether you’re on a bike, hiking the trails, or carving up the snow-covered slopes at Cairngorm Mountain and Glenshee. If you’re looking for a bit of everything, the famous Rothiemurchus Estate has you covered with everything from quad biking and archery to pony trekking.

If you’re after a quieter connection with nature, take a stroll through the ancient pine forests at Loch Garten, it’s a total haven for birdwatchers, especially if you’re hoping to spot an osprey or the rare Scottish crossbill. And don't forget the water; whether you're drifting down the Spey in a canoe or taking a more spirited adventure on the Dee, the park looks just as beautiful from the lochs and rivers.

PERTHSHIRE

The rivers and glens of Perthshire are a dream for anyone who loves getting lost in nature or learning about the past. The area is as visually rich as its history, with long-standing ties to the legendary outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor and the ancient lineages of Scottish Royalty.

This is truly world-class walking country where nature and history seem to trip over one another at every turn. You can wander through the enchanting woodland at The Hermitage to witness the crashing Black Linn Falls and the atmospheric Ossian’s Hall. The gardens at Drummond Castle are incredibly well-maintained and offer a sophisticated contrast to the rugged Highland wildness.

Make sure to drive past the Meikleour Beech Hedge if you can; it’s officially the tallest hedge in the world and has fascinating roots in Jacobite lore. For a royal fix, the massive Scone Palace is a must-see, as it served as the crowning place of Scottish kings for centuries. Finally, the Pass of Killiecrankie serves up breathtaking views alongside the lingering echoes of a famous Jacobite battle. All in all, Perthshire is a fantastic blend of everything great about the Scottish Highlands.
