Airport Transfer, Explore The New Town

AFTERNOON

Spend the afternoon exploring New Town – which isn’t very new. Its story starts in 1752 when a proposal was made to expand the city beyond the walls so that the more affluent members of the population could live in more comfort. In 1766 a competition was announced and won by an unknown architect called James Craig, who was only 23. But Scots have long shown that age is no barrier to invention and the stunning Georgian townhouses that line its broad avenues and open squares are a testament to creativity to be found.

Shoppers can enjoy The St. James’s Quarter close to Princes Street and upscale boutiques on and around George Street. There’s no shortage of museums and galleries that are home to the nation’s history and culture.

A short walk from your central hotel is the Scott Monument, a tribute to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. 200 feet 6 inches high, the tower sits upon a viewing platform that provides stunning panoramic views - the highest platform is reached by a total of 287 steps.

EVENING

Your hotel is home to a 4 AA Rosette restaurant celebrated for its modern Scottish cuisine, crafted using seasonal ingredients from trusted local suppliers. The Number One offers a five-course tasting menu, blending traditional flavours with their contemporary signature.

DAY 2

EXPLORE THE CAPITAL

MORNING

Your first morning in Scotland will begin with breakfast – where you’ll probably find a few things to try that you haven’t seen before (don’t worry, we give recommendations).

Meet your blue badge guide at hotel reception and you’re off to explore Edinburgh’s Historic Old Town. Your guide is an expert and experts love questions, so don’t shy away from asking questions, they’ll share the legends of the Royal Mile and some of Edinburgh’s most famous architecture.

ITINERARY

Private Walking Tour, Edinburgh Castle, Mary Kings Close

AFTERNOON

You’re free to choose from Edinburgh’s wide selection of cuisines for lunch, your driver-guide will be happy to make recommendations.

Following that, you’ll visit the first castle of the trip and it will take you on a journey back to the 12th century. You’ll walk in the footsteps of kings and queens, see where battle decisions were made in the Great Hall, where soldiers and royalty prayed in St Margaret’s Chapel. At 1 o’clock, you’ll witness the One o’clock Gun and the Honours of Scotland.

Greyfriars Kirkyard Cemetery offers an interesting glimpse into the past. The cemetery is best known for Bobby, a Skye terrier belonging to John Gray who died and was buried in the graveyard in 1872. Bobby is said to have sat by the grave for 14 years and he was buried just inside the gate not far from his master’s grave. For the Harry Potter fans, you can add a stop to Tom Riddle’s grave. JK Rowling lived nearby and was known to have spent time walking through the graveyard, undoubtedly looking for inspiration.

You may also want to stop by The Real Mary Kings Close, located under the Edinburgh City Chambers building during this time. Those who are interested in myths, urban legend and the darker side of history, will find their interest piqued by its tales of haunting and murders. The underground tour can give you a better insight into the curiosities that make Edinburgh so unique.

EVENING

Spend the evening enjoying the many culinary delights of The Dome, another of architect James Craig’s imaginings. Originally a Physicians Hall built in 1775, it soon went on to become a bank and then in 1996, a rather unique location for a restaurant.

A Georgian backdrop, food for every palate and impeccable service, the perfect way to wrap up day two before you enjoy an early evening or maybe get acquainted with the locals and their beverages.

Scone Palace.jpg

DAY 3

PALACES & CASTLES

MORNING

After a hearty breakfast it is time to leave Edinburgh and head to Perthshire and Scone Palace (pronounced Scoon), a Category A-listed historic house near the village of Scone and the city of Perth. It is the ancestral seat of Earls of Mansfield.

The Crowning Place of Scottish Kings (Moot Hill) is within its grounds. The first monarch to be enthroned here was Kenneth MacAlpin in 843. It is Kenneth I who brought the Stone of Destiny to Scone, thus establishing it as the site of coronations in Scotland. Kenneth’s inauguration was the first of many: Macbeth in 1040, Robert the Bruce in 1306 and Charles II in 1651 – the last king to be crowned there. Behind, opposite the front steps of the palace, is the 16th century archway, which is all that remains of the approach to the old abbey.

Built in Pitlochry in 1892 for Lieutenant Colonel George Sandeman, it is now a Category B-listed building and a luxury five-star hotel. You may find use of the Woodland Spa facilities, or enjoy a stroll across the beautiful castle grounds and the enchanting shores of Loch Faskally.

EVENING

You’ll be dining at 1892 on the Loch, whose chefs make strong gastronomical promises they never fail to deliver on. Their work supports local fishermen and farmers, so not only are the ingredients as fresh as possible, but sustainable. The original owners were famous for their port and sherry business, so you may want to end your evening drinking one in their honour, or having the perfect cup of tea (we’re biased, but Scottish water makes the best tea).
