The Crowning Place of Scottish Kings (Moot Hill) is within its grounds. The first monarch to be enthroned here was Kenneth MacAlpin in 843. It is Kenneth I who brought the Stone of Destiny to Scone, thus establishing it as the site of coronations in Scotland. Kenneth’s inauguration was the first of many: Macbeth in 1040, Robert the Bruce in 1306 and Charles II in 1651 – the last king to be crowned there. Behind, opposite the front steps of the palace, is the 16th century archway, which is all that remains of the approach to the old abbey.
You can walk around the palace and explore the gardens which are home to some of the biggest and most beautiful oak trees in the UK. There is a maze, a kitchen garden, a children’s play area and also a café.
Next up on your first full day in Scotland is time with Master Chocolatier, Iain Burnett, is fascinating even for those who lack a sweet tooth. One thousand men lost their lives on that fateful day.
After lunch we will visit Cawdor Castle. Built in the 14th century by the Thanes of Cawdor, who were an important family in the region. It was originally constructed as a defensive fortress and a residence for the noble family. The castle is famously associated with Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. According to legend, the Thane of Cawdor, a historical figure, was the inspiration for Shakespeare's character. The castle's association with Macbeth has become a significant part of its lore, although it is highly debated! The castle gardens are magnificent and there is even a nine hole golf course.
